The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has 27 biogas plants with a joint capacity to process about 133 tonnes of garbage. According to the year 2014, reports say that only 65 tonnes are processed in 13 plants, which are functional, and 3 plants were under construction. Today, there are 18 plants in total but only 15-20% is the total increase in the amount of garbage processing.

Around 100-150 workers are present at various biogas and vermicompost units in the city. Most of the workers belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC). Around India, the people who belong to the lower castes of the caste system are subjected to work in all the menial jobs.

Most of the workers at the biogas plant suffer from anosmia since they live in rooms provided by PMC at the biogas plants itself. It is a daily job, which they are forced to do.
